To change the refill:

• expose the knurled end of the refill by carefully pulling the pen apart at the center—this can be tight 
• unscrew refill from lower half of pen
• insert new refill and screw in until tight
• press fit the two halves of pen back together

You might assume this wood was intentionally stained black. It's actually stained black completely through by natural processes! The original log it was cut from was stained completely through by spending as much as 5,000 years submerged in a peat bog! When the last ice age ended in Europe, entire oak forests were submerged in water and sediment. The trees were stained a rich dark brown to black through a chemical reaction between naturally present iron salts and other minerals in the soil, tannins in the wood, and the acidic nature of the water. This process takes place over thousands of years and is made possible because the low oxygen levels of the submerged environment severely limit normal decay processes. These environmental conditions make the supply of bog oak a highly valued limited resource.
